- What is Orthodontics?
- Orthodontics is the art and science of moving teeth to create the smile you want!
- When should a child visit an orthodontist?
- You may want to schedule a visit for your child when the permanent teeth begin to come in, typically around 8 years old.
- Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?
- Certainly! The general dentist is going to be checking for cavities and doing regular cleanings. Dental hygiene takes on an even greater importance while you are undergoing orthodontic treatment to prevent staining and cavities.
- How does orthodontic treatment work?
- Light forces are put on the teeth that cause the bone to remodel. This causes the teeth to slowly move into alignment.
- How long does orthodontic treatment take?
- Every smile is unique! That means that our customized treatment plan will vary. On average, treatment can take approximately 18 months.
- What are Phase I and Phase II treatments?
- Phase I is early treatment done before all the permanent teeth are erupted, typically beteen the ages of 5 and 10. The goal is to help to guide the growth and tooth development in a way to make the second phase easier and quicker. Phase II is treatment after all permanent teeth have erupted
- Do I need braces or Invisalign?
- This is a very personal choice. If there is anything that you would like to change about your smile, this may be a reason to seek orthodontic treatment. - What are braces?
- Braces are typically metal affixed to the teeth using wires to straighten the teeth.
- Do braces hurt?
- As teeth begin to move, soreness is normal. There is also a period in which your cheeks, lips, and tongue are getting used to the irritation that braces may cause.
- Should I brush more often with braces?
- Without a doubt! Brush after every meal. Dental hygiene is very important while you are undergoing dental treatment.
- I’ve lost my retainer. What should I do?
- At Knox Family Smiles, it doesn’t matter if you’ve had braces with us or not. We will give you the best price to replace your retainer. Remember, it is important to always wear your retainer at night to keep your teeth from shifting. Retainers are for life!
- Do you have experience working with patients with special needs?
- YES we do! All are welcome here! Our team has experience working with patients with autism as well as other special needs. We will do our best to meet the needs of all our patients and can discuss any concerns you may have in advance at our free consultation as well as at any appointment.
- Am I too old for braces?
- You are never too old for braces. Adult teeth may not move quite as fast as the teeth of a younger person, but all people’s teeth can move!
- What happens when I get my braces off?
- Brackets are removed from the teeth, any remaining glue is removed, you are given the retainers to wear full-time. This is the best time to go see your dentist for a cleaning and a check.
- How much do braces cost?
- The cost of braces varies based on treatment time, but at Knox Family Smiles the average cost of treatment is $4,200. We also offer discounts and a flexible payment plan.
- Can I still play instruments with braces?
- Yes you can. However, there is an acclimation period. The more you practice your instrument, the sooner you will adjust to playing with your new braces! Learn more about caring for your braces with this Care Guide!
- Can I still play sports with braces?
- Yes, you can. We strongly recommend that you wear a mouthguard while you play. Ifyou experience a facial injury while playing sports, check your teeth and appliances to be sure that no teeth have loosened and that your appliance has not broken. If either occurs, please contact the office as soon as possible. More information is provided in our Care Guide!
- What is Invisalign?
- Invisalign a method of straightening teeth using a series of clear aligners that, with each successive aligner, adjusts the teeth to the desired position. Invisalign was the first clear aligner on the market. Due to its advanced technology, Invisalign continues to be the highest quality clear aligner available.
- Is Invisalign popular?
- Yes! We have people of all ages opt for a new smile using Invisalign. Invisalign is a more comfortable option and often considered more aesthetically pleasing. Unlike traditional braces there are no food restrictions. Dental hygiene is made easier as there are no wires used in Invisalign treatment. Invisalign is particularly popular with adults who want to straighten their teeth without obvious metal brackets and wires.
- What foods should I avoid when wearing Invisalign?
- None! You can eat whatever you like! The aligners are removed when you eat. When wearing aligners, it’s best to limit consumption to just water. You can find out more information about taking care of your aligners in this Care Guide.
- My teeth have shifted - can Invisalign fix it?
- For sure! Invisalign is a great option for quick correction of minor shifts in alignment.
- How much does Invisalign cost?

- Can I get different color ties for metal braces?
- Absolutely! We have more than 20 different colors to choose from! Represent your favorite sports, school, or just show off your own style!
